MEET THE TEAM – BRUCE LEISHMAN

When did you start and what do you do at the Folkie?

I started with the Port Fairy Mayoral Committee in 1988. This committee formed the Port Fairy Folk Festival Committee in 1991 to manage the 1992 festival. I am currently the President of the Festival Committee and look after sponsors, insurance and licensing matters. My role as President requires an overview of all portfolios.

What’s your favourite Folkie memory?

Being part of the initial team to manage the 1992 festival as it was unknown what to expect. The overall joy of the many people that come to Port Fairy for the weekend. Meeting some of the world’s great performers. Being part of a team that presents a world-class event.

What’s one thing people wouldn’t guess about your role?

The number of volunteer hours during the year. That I have been President for over 20 years. My previous life as a lawyer. That I built furniture for Harvey Norman. That I have not read this question !!!

What’s your go-to Folkie food or drink?

The Bratwurst sausage. Guinness, of course, although due to my role I rarely drink during the weekend.

What’s a song or artist that reminds you of the Folkie?

“It’s a long way to the top……” I always enjoy Claymore, The Bushwackers, most Scottish bands with the bagpipes. The Sunday Singalong is always a favorite. A special mention to Ruthie Foster, John McCutcheon and the sea shanties.

What’s the most rewarding part of being involved?

Being part of a team that produces a fantastic festival. Financially giving back to Port Fairy and District. Meeting new people. Telling our story to groups of people/students/etc. I get to go to corporate events being wined and dined.

What’s your Folkie survival tip?

Sleep well before the festival. Try not to get caught up with friends who are drinking in the bars. Make sure my wife enjoys the performances. Concentrate on the good things that happen. Resolve problems quickly. Plan what performances I will see over the weekend (I don’t get to see many).

If the Folkie were a person, how would you describe them?

Whoever wrote “A Man For All Seasons”. The need to listen, to make a judgement call and realise that there are 18 AFL coaches and not all will be winners.

What’s something you’ve learned from working on the festival?

How well known our festival is throughout Australia and the world. That the committee and staff are all wonderful people. The ability to look after numerous personalities and formulate new ideas. Our volunteers are sensational. No job is too much for some people. We have one goal – to put on an amazing festival.

What are you most excited about for the next Folkie?

Trying to find out who will be performing.

Being there.

It will be one more year to the sensational 50th event.

Meeting our friends.

All the smiling faces.

5.00pm Monday so that I can have a beer.
